Tyre Puncture – what and how dangerous is it?
A tyre puncture – or flat tyre – is a condition where the tyre deflates (slowly or rapidly). Furthermore, this causes the wheel’s rim to ride on the ground or on the tread of the tyre. Therefore this could potentially lead to loss of vehicle control at higher speeds and permanent tyre damage if continue to drive for longer time.
In case of a flat tyre, it is recommended to gradually slow down and come to a standstill on one side of the road. If you continue to drive, it is quite possible ending up damaging the wheel. As a result of the high speed and loss of control, you might be responsible for an accident.
Tyre Punctures – Common Causes
Most of all, the most common cause of a tyre puncture could be slow or rapid deflation of a tyre. This is depending on its size, due to a sharp object penetrating the tyre.
Other possible tyre puncture causes are:
- Breakage of the link between a tyre and rim owing to a collision with an external object.
- Excessively worn out tread that could result in an explosive tyre failure or debris from the road tearing through the tyre.
- Failure of a tyre’s valve stern.
When do you need to repair a tyre?
The puncture repair is not as simple process as it may seem. The tyre puncture repair process is regulated by a certain British Standard (BSAUl59). It defines limits to the repair materials that can be used and total number of repairs that can be carried out on a tyre. This is based on the location of the puncture and tyre size.
